Nature is Home in Seattle
Geography

Seattle sits on a piece of land between Lake Washington and the Puget Sound, about 450 feet above sea level. Beyond these bodies of water, you’ll find two rugged mountain ranges, the Cascades and the Olympics. Seattle is a large port of entry in the Pacific Northwest with boundless natural beauty, while its urban center boasts tall skyscrapers that overlook the surrounding waterways and green parks.

Climate

Ocean breezes combined with the shielding effects of the mountains give Seattle a mild, moist climate. The city experiences mild winters and cool summers, ranging between a low of 37°F in January and a high of 76°F in July. While Seattle is known for its rainy weather and cloudy skies, it actually gets less annual rainfall than other major US cities like New York, and it sees over 150 sunny days per year.

Flora

With numerous urban parks, Seattle is home to abundant botanical beauty—with ferns lining your footpaths and canopies of Pacific Northwest trees towering over you. Western hemlocks, Douglas firs, and western red cedars stand tall year-round, while big-leaf maple trees showcase fiery auburn hues in autumn. Vibrant native flowers add pops of color throughout the city, including blanket flowers, blue combines, Pacific bleeding hearts, common camas, fireweed, and more.

Fauna

Much of Seattle’s fauna soars through the sky with hundreds of bird species, including bald eagles, hummingbirds, owls, chickadees, woodpeckers, spotted towhees, ospreys, peregrine falcons, and Cooper’s hawks. Strolling throughout the city’s parks, you might spot creatures such as raccoons, beavers, deer, and possums. Seattle’s thriving waterways are also home to intriguing marine species like sea lions, sea otters, whales, seals, orcas, salmon, bass, trout, Dungeness crab, flounder, sunfish, and many more.

Natural Attractions

Nicknamed The Emerald City, this Seattle is brimming with green parks. Discover Park is the largest of them all, boasting 534 acres of diverse landscapes, trails, forests, meadows, bluffs, mountain views, and even beaches. Surrounding Seattle, you’ll find endless hiking opportunities, ranging from leisurely journeys at Mount Si to hikes of all levels at the famous Mount Rainier. You can also explore the beauty of the waterways through sailing excursions, ferry rides, kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing.

Sustainability

Seattle is a sustainability pioneer, maintaining progressive initiatives, policies, and standards to protect the planet. The city’s recycling rate is more than double the national average, and curbside composting diverts 60% of the city’s waste. On the energy front, 80% of the city’s power comes from hydroelectric and other renewable sources, while electric public transportation remains a priority. On a systems level, Seattle’s environmental accelerator program Interweave provides tangible frameworks to ignite lasting action, and the world’s biggest tech companies continue to call the city home and break new ground in the world of sustainability. Not to mention, 1 Hotel Seattle neighbors the Climate Pledge Arena, the most progressive, responsible, and sustainable arena in the world.
